Meet Otter and Ozzy. These Miniature Pigs have been stranded at an animal shelter for weeks with no owners to claim them and no one interested in giving them a place to live their life…

Once the Corona Virus took hold of our country, people started to scramble to figure out what the best course of action would be to stop the spread of this deadly virus. Businesses started to close to keep crowds from gathering. Sporting events were canceled, and schools were closed. Among these were Animal Shelters. Animal shelters have started to close their doors to the public to make it impossible for people to adopt a pet, find a lost pet or rescue and foster a pet. While the need for this to happen is severe and we all need to appreciate and understand what our community is trying to do… lost in this scramble are animals who have sat at the shelter for too long. They obviously had no owners to find them and their days to live at the shelter (which is always numbered due to the fact that there is always an income of new lost animals) are up. These pigs would not be at that animal shelter when the day comes to open back up. They were out of time and facing death.
Thankfully there is a “pig networking” group on social media who spends their days finding and rescuing the pigs that were “discarded” or never claimed. Leslie Oakley with Ameriaid was asked to step in and provide a temporary shelter for these pigs immediately as the doors were closing that same day and they were desperately trying to find a place to take these two pigs. With one phone call to David Kingsboro, an agreement was made and a shelter was created. All while Ameriaid prepared, a voluntary transport was being made to free the pigs from the animal shelter before the shelter closed and driving them the 90 mile distance to their temporary home.
Otter and Ozzy are safe. They are currently being cared for by our family on our property. Otter is about 4 years old and has a love for belly rubs and is learning to love new treats. He takes food gently from your hand and loves to be loved on. Ozzy came to us a lot more scared and spent his first night shaking with fear. He has a skin condition called mange from improper care and neglect but we have him on the correct medication to take care of the condition. He is learning to trust and loves food as he came to us severely under weight. The extra nutrients and love given to him these next few weeks will surely make a huge difference in his appearance and personality. He loves food and his favorite treats are berry flavored cheerios. Both these pigs are looking for a forever home to live in comfort. If you’d like to donate to their care please contact us. The funds donated will be used to purchase housing, straw, pig food, pig treats and to pay for them both to be neutered and vaccinated.
